Roberta’s – New York City

While eating at Madison Square Park’s Shake Shack, I noticed a lot of people carrying Eataly‘s paper bags.  Eataly! The foodies at Rose’s suggested Eataly and I totally forgot.  Luckily, there was an address on the bags and it turns out, Eataly is right across the street.

Eataly is a high end Italian food hall with restaurants, food and beverage stations.  It’s like a candy store for serious cooks and gourmets!  We ended up buying spreads, cookies and pastas…even though our luggage were full!

We had to hurry back to our hotel to go to the airport but right outside of Eataly were food stalls..

I saw the list of vendors and Roberta’s were there!  Roberta’s was the pizza place the foodies we met at The Spotted Pig mentioned.  We didn’t plan on trying because it was really far into Brooklyn so I was beyond happy when I saw Roberta’s.

They brought their own oven to make freshly-baked pizzas!

Margherita Pizza (tomato, mozzarella and basil) and added pepperoni …. the pizza was slightly burnt.. but the crust was thin enough…lots of sauce and cheese…

Jean-Georges – New York City

I wanted to have one mini splurge meal in New York so my friend suggested lunch at Jean-Georges.  It has 3 Michelin stars and the 2-course lunch is only $48! (it used to be $38 only).

I’ve been to Market by Jean-Georges in Vancouver but this restaurant in New York is the group’s flagship restaurant.

very minimalist decor…

For the 2 courses, there’s a choice of more than 20 dishes!

Started off with a trio of amuse bouche, which I forgot what it was…. but I remember it having an Asian twist to it..

spinach or melon soup???

Santa Barbara Sea Urchin, Black Bread, Jalapeno and Yuzu…mom picked this… the Yuzu covered any seafoody taste of the urchin.. very fresh!

Yellowfin Tuna Ribbons, Avocado and Spicy Radish, Ginger Marinade…. Dad and I both ordered this as this was a signature dish..very fresh tuna and the sauce used paired really well with the fish (better than just plain soy sauce and wasabi)…

black bass, crusted with Nuts and Seeds, Sweet and Sour Jus…. the parents both ordered this… i had a bite.. the fish was extremely tender and the skin was so crispy..

Seared Salmon, Cherry Tomatoes, Crispy Rice, Miso-Yuzu Broth… when I ordered this, the server mentioned that the salmon would be undercooked.. and this is why the salmon tasted to tender.  The fish didn’t have a strong taste since it wasn’t concentrated miso but miso broth.  I also liked the different in texture of the accompanying tomatoes, tofu and crispy rice.

We decided to order 2 dessert samplers ($12 each)

FIG dessert sampler (Fig Financier, Raspberries, Ginger Syrup and Spiced Fig Jam, Soft Chocolate, Almond Milk Sorbet)

CHOCOLATE dessert sample:  White Chocolate Ice Cream, Yuzu Sorbet,  Warm Chocolate Cake, Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

The Garden @ Four Seasons Hotel New York

Each morning, we had breakfast at the hotel… which wasn’t really worth it.  I mean, there are so many other things to eat while in New York!

The restaurant, by the lobby, has trees!!!

started off the day with this ultra-expensive acai smoothie (16 usd)….. not worth it…

Park Avenue Breakfast (eggs, sausage, potatos, salad and smoke salmon)….

“Super” Green Egg White Frittata – Spinach, Asparagus, Broccoli, Tofu… extremely bland…

eggs benedict with smoked salmon

Catskill Smoked Salmon Bagel – Capers, Vine Ripe Tomatoes, Red Onions, Cream Cheese…. good thing there’s a lot of smoke salmon..

Stuffed French Toast – Organic Blueberries, Nutella Butter…. pretty good

Buttermilk Pancakes….

The food quality is ok.. but overpriced at 120 USD for 3! We paid for bed and breakfast rate.. which was 100 USD more than the regular room rate.  Guess we saved $25.. but still.. I didn’t think it was worth it.

Má Pêche – New York City

Apart from the Milk Bar, I also want to eat something else of David Chang’s.  All the Momofuku restaurants are in the East Village except Má Pêche.  Its location in Midtown West is perfect for a pre-show meal…we ate here before going to Wicked.

Má Pêche is a fusion dim-sum restaurant but the decor is nothing like your typical Chinese dim-sum restaurant.  It’s set up more as a contemporary western restaurant.

Like a Chinese restaurant, the servers push carts around the restaurant for people to pick their choice.  I didn’t like Má Pêche’s cart-rolling method.  It was kind of unsanitary because none of the dishes are covered.  The servers basically spray their saliva all over the dishes because they explain each dish to each table.  Also, with no covers, the hot dishes were served warm.

watermelon salad ( slices of watermelon with egg salad, cucumber, and fried chicken skin in between)……. another inventive dish with watermelon. Like Rose’s, $13 for watermelon and potato.. not really worth it..

Momofuku’s famous pork bun…. It was pretty good.. but kind of messy to eat with because the pork is too big for the bun and keep sliding out…

soft-shell crab bun.. this was kinda spicy but it’s unique… never had this anywhere

lobster fried rice… this was our favourite dish as the lobster made the fried rice very fragrant. We ordered 2 of this!

Was a bit disappointed by this meal…. pricey for what you get (80+USD for a few dimsum choices.. and we weren’t even full)

O! and this doesn’t really work for a pre-show meal.  The dimsum carts move around so slow and each cart only have a few dishes.  By the time it went to a few tables, the choices you want are gone… and then you have to wait for another cart.

FAIM? un peu….!!
