Hollywood Studios – Disney World

The last park we visited was Hollywood Studios and to make use of our time on our last day, we only stopped for lunch.

The highest rated counter-service restaurant is the Starring Rolls Cafe (o the play on words!).

We ordered chocolate muffins and croissants.. and for dessert.. Disney World’s most famous cupcakes!

Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake… Red velvet cheesecake, topped with cheesecake, wrapped in frosting, covered in toffee pieces and drizzled with chocolate.  This should be considered as a mini-cake… or 2 minicakes (red velvet and cheesecake).  The sweetness of the red velvet cupcake and frosting is balanced by the tangy-taste of the cheesecake.

butterfinger cupcake….  this again is GIGANTIC .. biggest cupcake I have ever seen… The vanilla frosting is covered with crushed butterfingers and there’s fudge frosting in the middle of the chocolate cupcake. Unfortunately, this was entirely too sweet….

Because of the 2 cupcakes, I managed to have enough energy to last until the end of Extra Magic Hours  at 11pm…..

Magic Kingdom – Disney World

The park I was looking forward to most at Disney World was Magic Kingdom!

We got to the park 45 minutes before opening (yes.. I’m that crazy) and watched the welcome show and rope drop.  I’ve been to Disney countless times as a kid and teen but have never woken up that early to be there before opening… so this was a new experience.

In addition to lining up for rides, we also lined up for lunch at the most popular restaurant at Disney World, Be Our Guest.  The restaurant is the main part of the expansion of the Fantasyland expansion and has the theme and decor based on Beauty and the Beast.

Because we were staying at a Disney resort, we were eligible for FastPast + reservation.  Unfortunately, I didn’t book it until a few weeks before the trip, so they were all out.   We started lining up for lunch at 10:15 (opens at 10:30am) and about 10 minutes after they start letting people in, the cast member said the first seating is all full and to come back at noon.  We didn’t listen, stayed in line and got into the castle by 11am.

the rose!!!

We ordered the food before entering the restaurant and was given a rose that lights up and lets the cast member know where you’re sitting.

potato leek soup…

Tuna Niçoise Salad – Warm Seared Tuna Steak, chilled Green Beans, Potatoes, Olives, Roasted Bell Peppers, Tomatoes and a Hard Poached Egg.

Braised Pork (Coq Au Vin Style)– Eight Hour Slow-cooked Pork with Mushrooms, Onions, Carrots and Bacon served with Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans Jardiniere….

The Master’s Cupcake (Chocolate Sponge Cake topped with Lumiere’s special “Grey Stuff”)

Triple Chocolate Cupcake ( Chocolate Sponge Cake, Chocolate Mousse Filling and Chocolate Ganache)….

After lunch, we rode on more rides and then went looking for Disney World’s most famous ice-cream, Dole Whip.

Only Aloha Isle in Adventureland sells this popular icy treat.  There’s 2 lines from the 2 sides and both are equally long.  We waited for more than 10 minutes…

We got the Dole Whip soft-serve in pineapple flavour and the Pineapple Float (pineapple dole whip in pineapple juice)…. Love this! perfect for the hot humid weather. The pineapple whip is soooo pineapply and not sweet.. so it’s made of the real stuff.  The float is double the goodness… but the pineapple juice was kinda sour compared to the whip.

After that.. we played till the sun went down…..

For dinner, we decided for something quick again and found a highly rated counter-service restaurant (yay for free wifi at Disney).

the picture is kinda dark.. but the restaurant is called Harbour House, a seafood restaurant…

Garden Harvest Salad (Mixed Greens, Garden Vegetables, Green Beans, Carrots, and Chicken)….

Battered Fish Basket with fries, Seafood Macaroni & Cheese ( Lobster and Shrimp served over Macaroni & Cheese), Chicken Pot Pie, Steamed Fresh Broccoli, apple slices… pretty gourmet food for a fast-food restaurant. The Mac & Cheese had chunks of lobster! The batter for the fish was thin and crispy. The pot pie was creamy.. which the parents loved and my mom wants to try this at home…

I actually preferred to food at Harbour House than Be Our Guest…We stayed at Magic Kingdom past the closing time! Such a tiring yet fun day!

Georgetown Cupcake – Washington, D.C.

Ever since it appeared on TLC’s  DC Cupcakes and other tv shows, Georgetown Cupcake became another crazed cupcakery in America.  It started with one shop in Georgetown and expanded to 6 other locations nationwide.

I read on Yelp that weekday lines are normally 30mins – 1 hour and weekends, 1-2 hours!  Instead of lining up, I ordered the cupcakes online a day earlier, and could walk right into the store to pick it up!

This was our first time in DC and instead of sightseeing, my first stop was to pick up my cupcakes!

TA-DAH!

We ordered:

1 Chocolate Coconut
1 Chocolate Ganache
2 Red Velvet
1 Salted Caramel
1 Vanilla Birthday

I love how the cupcakes are decorated.. it’s simple yet cute!  Tastewise… the cupcakes were tooooooooooo toooooooooooo sweet… to the point where we discarded the frosting and just ate the cake (which was moist)…

We were disappointed with the cupcakes.. and if I had to wait in line for these, these would not be worth it.

After the cupcakes, we had to walk it off before our next meal!

gorgeous Georgetown..

Sprinkles Cupcakes – Chicago

A block away from our hotel is Sprinkles, the cupcakery from LA!

Sprinkles is considered the first ever bakery dedicated to only cupcakes.

Earlier this year, Sprinkle’s cupcake ATM machine made the news as the first cupcake atm ever! I didn’t try this because it costs 50 cents more for an individual box.

dog-friendly cupcakes!

We brought it back to Vancouver and had it the next day. The cupcakes were still intact and tasted very fresh and moist!

From top left CW:

Dark chocolate (Belgian dark chocolate cake with bittersweet chocolate frosting)

Black and White (Belgian dark chocolate cake and creamy vanilla frosting)

Coconut (Madagascar Bourbon vanilla cake is topped with coconut cream cheese frosting)

Red Velvet (with cream cheese frosting)

Loved the cupcakes! so moist and not too sweet!

Kisses Cupcakes – Hong Kong

Kisses Cupcakes is a new cupcake addition in SOHO and Gough Street is becoming THE foodie street (neighbours include Sing Heung Yuen and Kau Kee).

We went after school (around 5pm) and all the cupcakes are sold out except for the S’mores  cupcakes and one lone lemon cupcake.

Instead of an icing topping, there’s a marshmallow topping, which was tasteless, and the cupcake itself was dry and not buttery.  I was extremely disappointed and this cupcake was a waste of calories.

On the plus side, the cupcake plate was cute!

COCO @ The Mira Hotel – Hong Kong

It was my bff’s birthday so we had to celebrate with some sort of cake! The only cupcake place I know of in Tsim Sha Tsui is COCO @ The Mira Hotel.  It’s more of a patisserie and their cupcakes are a work of art!

We got the Chocolate Addict (Chocolate cup cake – milk crispy chocolate center – White chocolate cream – Dark chocolate Ganache)  and the Mango Red Velvet (Red velvet cup cake-fresh mango-mango cream-mango jelly cube).  Each cupcake costs $32.

My BFF loves red velvet cupcake (she can even bake her own!) and Coco’s version was a disappointment.  The cupcake didn’t have the red-velvet taste so the cupcake was really a mango cupcake instead.

The Chocolate Addict on the other hand is probably the best cupcake I have ever eaten.  There were different textures: smooth ganache on top and crispy chocolate wafers in between the moist cupcake.  Plus.. it’s so artfully decorated!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTINA!
