Day Trip to Golden Triangle

We did a day trip out to the Golden Triangle, where the mountains of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand overlap.

Prior to the trip, the highlight of this day trip was the boat trip to Laos…disappointingly, the part of Laos we docked at was just a flea market for the Golden Triangle visitors.

We also stopped by the breathtaking Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple)..

and the Karen Long Neck Tribe village….

it actually feels a bit weird because these women are on display.. like at a zoo….

For lunch, our guide took us to a buffet restaurant but with my weak stomach,  I decided to only eat cooked veggies…

Our guide stopped the car a few times to buy us snacks to try…. the best guide ever!

watermelon crispies… couldn’t taste the watermelon but it was crispy!

Eating in Banff – Canada

Because we had a decent lunch at Saltlik, we decided to try Saltlik in Banff.

nachos….. extremely disappointed… instead of guacamole, there were hard, unripened avocado….

Sirloin with sweet potato fries…….

striploin with salad…..

This meal was a bit disappointing when compared with the meal in Calgary.  The steaks weren’t that good and the service was subpar.

We went to Lake Louise to watch sunrise and it was so pretty! We hiked up to the viewing point and had an amazing view of the lake and the Chateau Lake Louise.

The reflection of the lake is just like a painting!

We didn’t stay at the Chateau because of the very expensive room rate, so we settled for breakfast there…… and it was also very expensive! The buffet breakfast was 33 CAD! That’s all I ate for $33…… it was not worth it…..

Lake Moraine, another breathtaking view.

Four Seasons Mumbai – India

In Mumbai, we stayed at the Four Seasons…..the service was good, but not as personalized as Trident.

The view from our rooms.  You could see the disparity between rich and poor in just this photo: Mumbai’s slum and the world’s most expensive private residence in the distance.

The breakfast buffet was better than Trident  though….masala chai…… watery though…

mango smoothie……………….. sooooooo goooood

mango lassi…….. I had 2 smoothies and 2 lassis… I have no self-control because I should have limited myself due to my lactose-intolerance…..

eggs benedict and floretine together!!!! I told them to put a piece of ham onto my eggs floretine….

hashbrowns and bacon…..

omelette….

dosa….. most modern plating for dosa ever….

japanese breakfast…. I love trying the Japanese breakfast at the Four Seasons because it’s also the only time I have it (apart from when in Japan)….

waffles with chocolate chips and syrup…..

A variety of meals in Jaipur – India

From Agra, we drove to Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. I have read about the many tour guide scams at this place so I was kind of iffy when our driver picked a random man off the streets to be our guide.

However.. this was clearly a case of “don’t judge the book by its cover.”  Our guide turned out to be extremely intelligent and apparently teaches French at the local university.

From Fatehpur Sikri, we continued onto Jaipur, where we also stayed at Trident.

Our room over looked the lake and could see Jal Mahal (Lake Palace) in the distance… The entire front yard of the hotel was set up for the MANDATORY Christmas Eve buffet dinner.  I did not like the mandatory dinner and it was 80 USD and the quality was sub par…… For that price I would assume they would be seafood but nooooooo….. It’s just regular western food and Indian food….

The only interesting thing was they had grilled steak! The one and only time I saw beef in India.

freshly made roti and naan….

I tried this interesting milk and herbs.. It was very rich but also very sweet….

The next day, we had a day touring Jaipur… elephant ride up to Amber fort…

Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace)….. This building looks extremely out of place because it’s located on a busy main street with normal looking buildings around it…

Jaipur is also called the “pink city” as their buildings are pinkish in colour….

We had a very late lunch at another restaurant catered to tours and again the naan and butter were delicious!

For dinner, we had a lovely home-cooked meal at the house of Sabu, the tour company’s owner.   It was a very traditional meal.. .we even sat on the floor to eat!  His wife prepared vegetable curry, briyani and naan… delicious, but a bit spicy!

Per Kg buffet – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

One really great dining option that is everywhere in Rio is per kg buffet.  You can pick whatever you want at the buffet and is charged per kg… this is perfect for small eaters like me!

We chose Grill Inn because it also is has a churrascaira station.  Brazil is famous for  meat cooked in Churrasco style.. aka BBQ.  The meat is barbecued in a big skewer and you can request for cuts in any thickness.

Apart from the BBQ meats, there are also other hot dishes, pastas and salads.  There’s also sushi, but the price per kg is more expensive. The average price is R$ 3.50 – R$4.00 per 100 grams ($1.5 CAD).

We liked putting our receipts in order of price… and each time, the biggest eater turned out to be a surprise! But I’m always the 2nd lightest eater!

We ended up having 3 buffet meals cause we really like the variety of the food offered and how economical it was.  They should have more of these per kg buffets in North America and Asia because people waste less food if they have to pay by weight.

Enchanted Garden Restaurant @ Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel – Hong Kong

My aunt held her birthday dinner at Disneyland Hotel’s Enchanted Garden Restaurant.  Her grandson wanted to have a birthday bash with the Disney characters but it wouldn’t be his birthday until next year.. so his grandma’s birthday would have to do!

My inner child had such a great time and clapped with glee with all the Disney references! All the major Disney characters came around and I took pictures with them all! The last time I ate with Disney characters was at Disney World when I was 7.. I feel kind of old now! I went the week before Halloween so there were Halloween decorations all around.

They only had one Mickey Mouse cake that night and I had to honour of cutting it!

I didn’t eat a lot…well… I tried all the dessert and..

sashimi...

and lobsters!

A lot of people there were celebrating their birthdays… A Disney character came with the cake and sang/took pictures with the whole group.  I had a great time but it costs 500+ HKD per person and for the same price, I could have buffet at an expensive hotel!

The Buffet @ Wynn – Las Vegas

The only buffet we had on this trip was the dinner buffet at Wynn. I’m not a big fan of  buffets cause I’m on a DIET!!

The interior design gives off this garden-party atmosphere.. kind of like the Bellagio.

I’m Asian.. so of course I stacked up on the Alaskan king crab legs (gotta get my money’s worth)!! You can even ask them to grill it for you!

But the best part of the buffet is the dessert! Cupcakes, crème brulée, cookies, puddings, cakes, gelato, caramel apple, chocolate coated marshmellow and a crêpe station!
