Hakata Ippudo – Hong Kong

Ippudo’s the latest restaurant to hit Hong Kong’s ramen scene.  Ippudo’s Chef Shigemi Kawahara was the champion of TV Tokyo’s national ramen competition three times in a row from 1995-1998 and has earned an official title of “ramen king.”

The first branch in Hong Kong opened in Tsim Sha Tsui.  A month earlier, I went around 6:30pm on a Friday night and had to wait for 120 + tables! While waiting for our table, we had a tiny meal at Ding Tai Fung !  We went back to Ippudo and we still had to wait for another 30 tables!  Long story cut short, we missed our table 😦  .

The second branch of Ippudo opened recently in Causeway Bay.  We went during lunch hour and only had to wait for 3 tables! They have this cool ticket machine where you input your cell number and they’ll call you when your table’s ready!

BBQ pork bun (white bun stuffed with a thick slice of pork, lettuce, IPPUDO’s secret BBQ sauce, Japanese mayonnaise and mustard)….This is one of Ippudo’s famous snack.  The pork was soft (the melt-in-your-mouth kind) and I loved the bbq mayo!

Yuzu miso spicy ramen

Shoyu ramen

Miso ramen

Ippudo’s ramen is really good! The soup was flavourful and not too salty.. the noodles were chewy (not to soft, not too hard).. the pork was tender and had just enough fat.  Both Butao and Ippudo are tops in my favourite ramen list.. but Ippudo is slightly winning because the restaurant has air-conditioning!

O and Cheung Chi-Lam and his wife was sitting across from us!

FAIM? OUI OUI!!

  1. WOW! I’m so glad I found your blog because I’m from Vancouver too, but Hong Kong holds a special place in my heart. I’m planning to do an exchange for a semester to HKU or CUHK in 2 years, and I’m curious- are you there on an exchange as well?

Looking forward to future posts! I, too, am a total foodie and any HK talk gets me excited, hehe.

  2. Hey Elaine! Yea there’s so much to eat in HK so you should definitely do your exchange here! I’m currently studying dentistry at HKU.
