Next up on my to-eat-list on Korean Street is Hansung Co.

Instead of serving traditional Korean cuisine, it serves “fast-food” style food. There’s no fancy cooking, just simple basics.

Maybe that’s why there’s only 2 types of appetizers?

beef hot pot with rice

japchae (potato noodles) with beef

jajangmyun (black bean noodles)

spicy dukbokki and ramen

The japchae and the beef hot pot tastes almost the same (japchae had more potato noodles and hot pot has soup). Weird thing, this place doesn’t serve soju.

My foodie aunt took me to dinner at Korean Street (Kimberely Street). Even though I’m crazy for everything Korean, I didn’t know there was an entire street with Korean restaurants, supermarkets and deli! Namdaemoon is a tiny restaurant with less than 10 tables so we had to wait a while. After 25 minutes, the staff said that the next available table is ours. BUT another staff gave the table to a party of 2, who was already eating (in a table shared with another customer), but wanted to have their own table. We were hungry, tired and cold and now beyond pissed off.

As usual, I had to eat bimbibap and seafood pancake.

But this time, I also tried the bean paste stew (daenjang chigae). It was perfect for a cold winter night!

Despite the horrible service, the food was pretty delicious.

Misocool – Hong Kong

Another restaurant with a cool name.. Mi So Cool.. haha! My cousin treated me to lunch at the Central branch of Misocool and the place was packed! We paid an extra ($20?) so we can have 2 appetizers and a drink.

The tofu with sesame sauce had a pool of water inside the bowl and diluted the sauce.. same with the salad.

I ordered one of their signature ramen which is pan-fried ramen in a bowl of soup… very oily and tasted funny.

Brat – Hong Kong

First, it was the name that sold me.. how cool is it to name a restaurant BRAT? Second, it’s a restaurant that serves gourmet hot dogs!

My friend and I each ordered the “Be a Brat” set ($99) which comes with fries and a hot dog. For a hot dog set, it’s pretty expensive….

The set fries come with ketchup but I really wanted to try the truffle mayo fries so I had to pay an extra $15 for some truffle mayo! The fries were hot and crispy..my favourite kind and the truffle mayo was so creamy and fragrant!

I ordered the Portobello with signature bun (portobello mushrooms, dried champignons, porcini, sage with honey mustard and caramelized onions) while my friend ordered the Sun dried tomatoes mozzaraella with signature bun (Sun dried tomatoes, mozzaraella, basal with sautéed mushrooms and honey mustard).

The hot dog was pretty good: buns were crispy on the outside but soft and moist on the inside and the sausage was tasty ( I could actually taste the portobello mushroom inside the sausage).

Faim? oui oui!!

Kung Lee 公利 – Hong Kong

Kung Lee is an old-school Chinese herbal/dessert joint famous for their sugar-cane dessert.

I wanted to try the sugar-cane pudding but it was all sold out

We ended up getting the sugar-cane juice and it tasted real…not like the artificially sweetened sugar-cane juice from Hui Lau San. Kung Lee’s sugar-cane juice wasn’t overly sweet and there’s a slight hint of grassiness.

I also tried their Tortoise Jelly Pudding(龜苓膏), a Chinese herbal dessert made with powdered shell of a tortoise and other herbal products. Supposedly, eating this would improve your skin complexion and and get rid of “hot air.” I’ve tried the Hui Lau San version (which didn’t taste herb-y and was very watery) but this was was quite herb-y and tasted a lot better (texture wise too).
